Wisconsin Court System - Circuit courts
The Wisconsin circuit courts are the state's trial courts. Circuit courts have original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal matters within the state, including probate, juvenile, and traffic matters, as well as civil and criminal jury trials. Currently, there are 253 circuit court judges in Wisconsin.

June 24, 2022 - The Wisconsin Supreme Court has appointed circuit court judges from Waushara, Outagamie and Taylor counties as new chief judges of their respective judicial administrative districts, effective Aug. 1, 2022. The Court also re-appointed judges from Kenosha and Barron counties to continue as chief judges.

The Circuit Courts and the Courts of Appeals were created in 1978. The Supreme Court consists of 7 justices, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals has 16 judges, and the Wisconsin Circuit Court has 253 judges in 72 counties. All the judges and justices are elected in nonpartisan elections.
